First Grade Parent Meeting

Hello Neuse Families!
Thank you so much for coming out last night for our  informational meeting. I really hope you were able to get some helpful information about our wonderful program. We as teachers are working together to ensure that every child is reached at his/her level. Here is the powerpoint presentation that we had up last night. If you have any questions, please make sure to email your teacher!

Homework Questions

Hello Neuse Families!

I have had a few questions about homework and I am so sorry I have not been very clear with the directions. All students are working on List 2 for the sight words and they are on the next Fluency sheet. I am leaving the fluency sheet and the Sight word lists in the notebooks to keep as a reference for myself and also the student/parent. We have started on our mClass assessments this week and it will go on until next week. Since we are still in the process of assessing and working on our Kindergarten review, we are staying on the same levels. The only sheet that was removed from the notebook was the math homework sheet.

I completely understand those children that are ready to move on, however, we have to make sure all of the assessments are complete so we can meet the needs of all of our students. We will discuss this in further detail tomorrow at our First grade meeting. Remember, we are meeting at the High School Commons area at 5:30. We will have a powerpoint presentation so if you are unable to make it, I will be happy to send you a copy.

On Friday, I also allowed the students to take home their Reading Notebooks to show off. They have been so excited to have their very own books to be able to write their notes and work on new material. Hopefully you were able to take a look and discuss with your student what they have been reviewing in class. We will work daily in our Reading Notebook and I will periodically send them home.

Please also make sure that your student brings their OWL Notebook to class every single day. The have their behavior chart inside which needs to be initialed nightly. We also use table points throughout the day to make sure that we are all on task. At the end of the day we count out the points and I will begin to add a sticker to the back of their OWL notebook to all the students that belong to the group winners.

Moving Along

Hello Neuse families!

I hope you have had a fantastic week so far. Tomorrow is Friday and our first homework will be due. If you have any questions regarding the procedures of homework, please send me an email. I am happy to help!

We are still working on our assessments and the big mClass assessment begins next week. Once we have all of our assessments complete, we will begin our grouping and specific spelling words and sight words will be sent to all of our students. I know some of our students have already mastered the sight words that were sent home, but please have them continue to work with them (especially spelling them) until we have a better understanding of where they are academically.

Please remember to sign the sheet in the notebook stating you have seen the paper work that was sent home (red Monday folder). We have also started our behavior chart this week so please review this with your child and initial everyday.

I am absolutely LOVING my class of students and I hope they are enjoying their first grade experience so far!

Donor's Choose: DOUBLE TIME!!!!

Subject: Doubled donations when you help my students today!

Hi Friends,

I want to make sure my students have the materials they need to succeed, so I've created a classroom project request through DonorsChoose.org, an award-winning charity.

Donations of any size will help my kids. Right now, any contribution you make to my project will be doubled by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Your donation will brighten my students' school year, and you'll get heartfelt thank yous from my class and photos of your gift in action.

Here's my classroom request:

Moving and Learning

To have your donation matched dollar for dollar, just make a contribution on that project page - donations will be doubled automatically, but only while funding lasts.

If you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along. My students and I greatly appreciate your support.

Week 2 August 22-26, 2016

I hope you have had a restful weekend! We are gearing up for another full week of school and I am so excited!

A few reminders:

* Please make sure to bring a water bottle to class everyday.

* I sent out the first homework packet this Friday. Students are NOT required to do homework over the weekend, but they may use this as a way to get a head start. As I wrote on their homework paper, if after 30 minutes they are still working, please STOP! It will not count against them if they did not finish.

* With the math homework,  make sure they are working down the column not across.  It has been brought to my attention that the stars and pencils are too light to see on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday there should be 15 stars and there should be 19 pencils.

* I will begin our spelling program once we have all our assessments completed.

* If your child has a medical issue that requires them to use the restroom several times (6-7 times) a day, please let me know. I have a handful of students that go to the bathroom more than 5 times throughout the day, sometimes within 15 minutes. We have set times when we go but if they are constantly going though out the class period, they tend to miss directions.

*Monday folders will be sent home today in our OWL Notebooks. Please sign that you have seen the paper work and return them to school on Tuesday. I keep these and file them for the year and use them for conferences or information regarding their assessments. They will all be returned to you at the end of the year.

If you gave any questions, please do not hesitate to drop me an email.

Happy Monday!

What a Fantastic Day!!

We had a great day yesterday! I have such a great group of first graders and it has been fun learning about each individual child.

Just a few quick reminders:

* The doors to the elementary building will be closed to all students until 7:50. If your student has a sibling in MS/HS they need to go to the MS/HS elective building (in front of the first grade classrooms) until it is time to go to class. Please do not drop off earlier than 7:50 if they do not have an older sibling.
* Students can bring a light weight sweater to class- I have two temperatures in my classroom (ice box or sweltering rainforest).
*  Please make sure to pack a heavy snack and a lunch with your student.  Students do not eat until 12:30 so when they have a light snack at 9:55 and have to wait until 12:30, they are STARVING!! :)
* A water bottle is also encouraged for each student (I would love to have some donations of water bottles to keep in the classroom if we have someone forget).

I also want to thank all the parent volunteers I have had so far in my classroom. I appreciate your support and willingness to lend a hand.

Welcome!

I would like to thank you for attending our Open House. It was great to meet so many of our new first grade students and parents. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to the new families of Neuse Charter School! We had a great turnout. The support and involvement of families is greatly appreciated and I look forward to working closely with you and your child this year.

Please remember that school starts tomorrow, bright and early! Drop off begins at 7:50 and ends at 8:12.  Students will be tardy by 8:15 and will need to be walked in and checked in at the office. Also, any paper work that was taken during Open House can be returned with your child on the first day of school.

If you walk your child in on the first day of school, I will have a sheet at my back table asking how your child will be picked up in the afternoon. If it is not filled out, I will be calling during our lunch time so I can make sure all our kiddos get where they are supposed to be. Carpool will begin at 3:15. I hope my kiddos are all excited to start school tomorrow. I can't wait to start the new year!

Volunteers: The first two weeks of school will be spent on learning rules and procedures as well as taking informal assessments. The next two weeks after, will be spent working on our mClass assessments. This means that we will not begin our centers until September. I will be sending out a sign up genius when we are about to begin, so you may sign up that way. However, I can still use some help! If you are able to come in to the classroom, I can use some help setting up. I have several projects that need to be finished but now have little time to complete them. This includes labeling (hot glue or tape), setting up my curtains over areas to cover shelves (hot glue), as well as other odds and ends. If you are able to come in, please send me an email and let me know when you would like to help. Thank you for your support!
