The
Writing Workshop, similar to the Reading Workshop, is a method of
teaching writing using a workshop method. Students are given
opportunities to write in a variety of genres and helps foster a love
of writing. The Writing Workshop allows me to meet the needs of
students by differentiating their instruction and gearing instruction
based on information gathered throughout the workshop.
Through
writer's workshop, the students experience and practice all the
stages involved in the writing process. At the beginning of our writer's
workshop, I will use a mini-lesson that targets a specific writing
skill. Following the mini-lesson, the students will be given independent
writing time. During this time, I will be holding writing conferences
to discuss writing
with small groups of children and/or individual students. Sometimes
the students will participate in a sharing session. During share time,
several students share a piece of writing while all others listen. The students are taught to carefully listen to each author and give appropriate feedback. Here are the areas in which we will work on throughout the school year.
